At Larson Orthodontics, we believe the retention phase of your treatment is just as important as the active treatment phase.  After all, you will want to keep that new beautiful smile.  The type of retention/retainer used is based on a patient by patient basis.  Dr. Larson will prescribe the best retainer to fit your needs. Retainers can be either removable (the kind you take in and out) or fixed (bonded behind your teeth).  Long-term retention is recommended, as well as periodic visits to our office to evaluate your retainers.  Wearing your retainers as prescribed is the best way to keep your teeth from moving following orthodontic treatment. It is also the best way to protect your orthodontic investment.

Dental Appliances

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York

Palatal Expander
A palatal expander is used to widen the upper jaw. In most cases, expanders are fixed in place. Dr. Larson and his staff will instruct you how to use your expander.

Holding Arch
There are many different types of holding arches used. These fixed appliances are usually used to prevent back teeth from drifting forward.

Bite Plate
A bite plate is used to help treat a deep-bite. It is often removable and made of acrylic. It fits on the roof of the mouth and works by allowing the back teeth to further erupt.

Pendulum Appliance
This fixed appliance is bonded to the upper premolar teeth. It is used to create space for upper teeth by distalizing (moving back) the upper molars. It is made of acrylic and various types of orthodontic wire. It is often in place for 5 to 8 months.

Forsus® Appliance
The Forsus appliance is used in cases where the lower jaw is positioned back and there is an “over-bite” present. The Forsus® appliance reduces the “over-bite” by positioning the lower jaw forward and moving the upper molars backward. This fixed appliance is used in growing individuals and is often in place for 8 to 12 months.

Elastics/”Rubber bands”
Elastics, also known as rubber bands, are used to improve the fit of the upper and lower teeth. They also can be used to help close spaces between teeth. Elastics come in different sizes. For the best result, elastics should be changed daily and worn as instructed.

Head Gear Therapy
The most common treatment headgear is used for correcting anteroposterior discrepancies. The headgear attaches to the braces via metal hooks or a facebow. Straps or a head-cap anchor the headgear to the back of the head or neck. In some situations both are used. Elastic bands apply pressure to the bow or hooks. Its purpose is to slow-down or stop the upper jaw from growing, hence preventing or correcting an overjet.

Face mask Therapy Face mask therapy is a type of head-gear which is used to move the upper jaw forward. It is best used in younger patients before they have a major growth spurt. It is used in conjunction with elastics and often palatal expansion.

Retainers are a type of orthodontic appliance. They are used at the end of treatment to hold your teeth in their new position. Retainers can be fixed or removable. It is very important to wear your retainers as instructed.

Invisalign and other clear aligners

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York

Dr. Douglas Larson is a certified Invisalign® provider

Consider Invisalign® to get the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted – without braces. A consultation with Dr. Larson can determine if Invisalign® is right for you.

What is Invisalign®?braces

Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. So you can smile more during treatment, as well as after. Invisalign® is made using 3-D computer technology, and has been proven effective.

Not only are the aligners virtually invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Also, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy teeth and gums. There is no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments.

How does Invisalign® work?

You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position. You’ll visit Dr. Larson once every 4-6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-16 months depending on the severity of the case.

Here at Larson Orthodontics, we offer Invisalign for the benefit of our patients.  It is important to understand that Invisalign is not a replacement for braces therapy, but an alternative.  Invisalign is not right for everyone.  Ask about it at your consultation and we will let you know if it could be right for you.

To discuss the types of braces that would work best for you, feel free to call Larson Orthodontics to schedule your orthodontic exam and consultation today. 716.483.1718.

All types of braces

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York
  • Traditional Brackets
    • We have chosen a bracket that has a low profile design, which helps to reduce occlusal interference.  Inner and outer tie wing edges are smooth for patient comfort. The efficient design also reduces overall bracket size, maximizing performance, aesthetics, and comfort, while reducing occlusal work
  • Esthetic/White Brackets
  • Invisible – Patients concerned about their appearance in metal brackets can now take comfort that they have a choice to choose a clear alternative bracket that are virtually invisible, giving them confidence in work and social situations
  • Smooth Comfort – We have chosen a clear bracket (brace) that is smooth to the touch making them safe and comfortable for the patient.
  • No Staining – Not only do the brackets look great, they stay that way. The clear bracket’s monocrystalline structure and highly polished surface serve as barriers to undesirable staining elements.

  • Self-ligating
  • Unlike traditional braces, self-ligating braces have a built-in mechanism to hold the wire in place. Since elastic ties are not used, you cannot choose different colors with these brackets.  It was once thought that self-ligating brackets resulted in less discomfort and shorter treatment times (less time in braces).  Unfortunately, recent findings have shown this to NOT be true.  While self-ligating brackets are still used by many orthodontists for a variety of reasons, research has shown them to work no better or worse than traditional braces. If you are interested in self-ligating brackets and feel they are right for you, we do have them available

Adult Treatment

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York

Concerns about the look of braces used to keep some adults from starting orthodontic treatment. Now with the use of aesthetically pleasing orthodontic brackets or clear aligners, concerns are few and more adults are saying, “it’s my turn” to have a better, new smile.
Braces aren’t just for kids anymore. Teeth alignment can be changed at any age if your gums and bone structure are healthy. We offer a variety of treatments that are designed for different age groups – including adults. A new smile can begin today.

Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, and abnormal wear of the tooth enamel.

Good news! The new techniques and appliances we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, and may shorten treatment time.  Your options may include metal braces, translucent braces or transparent aligners that can be worn to improve mild cases of misaligned teeth.

During the initial examination, we will be able to determine the best possible treatment for your individual needs. During this initial examination, we can outline the treatment plan, give an estimation of treatment length and cost.

A good percentage of our patients are adults, and they agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Why screen by age 7?

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York

  • The posterior occlusion is established when the first molars erupt. At that time, one can evaluate the anteroposterior and transverse relationships of the occlusion, as well as discover any functional shifts.
  • Incisors have begun to erupt and problems can be detected such as crowding, habits, deep bites, open bites and some facial asymmetries.
  • For some, a timely screening will lead to significant treatment benefits; for most the principal immediate benefit is a parent’s peace of mind.
  • The dentist who makes timely referrals is rightly regarded as informed, caring and concerned for the total well being of the patient.

Why straighten teeth?

Best Orthodontists in Chautaqua and Erie Counties New York

At Larson Orthodontics, our practice’s top priority is to provide the highest quality orthodontic care in a friendly and comfortable environment. It’s our goal to help people look and feel better about themselves. We are committed to keeping our patients not only motivated, but also educated about the benefits of orthodontic treatment.

Straight teeth help an individual to effectively bite, chew and speak. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems. Teeth that work better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment.

An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image—important qualities at every age. A pleasing appearance is a vital component of self-confidence. A person’s self-esteem often improves as orthodontic treatment brings teeth, lips and face into proportion. In this way, orthodontic treatment can benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life.

There are psychological aspects that are also important. It has been clinically proven that a beautiful smile leads to higher self-esteem. Confidence generates success. People with beautiful smiles have a lot to be happy about.

Orthodontics is devoted to building beautiful smiles by bringing teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment. Straight teeth function better, are easier to clean, and are more likely to last your lifetime.

Your orthodontist can improve most tooth and jaw alignment problems at any age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist no later than age seven.

To have a successful orthodontic outcome, you must work together with your orthodontist.  Orthodontic correction can only occur if the patient plays an active role in treatment.  Your orthodontic responsibilities include following the instructions given by Dr. Larson and staff, maintaining proper oral hygiene and proper care of your orthodontic appliances while also keeping regular appointments with your general dentist.  Besides braces, orthodontists use many other devices, often referred to as appliances, to treat their patients. Appliances can either be fixed (cemented) or removable (can come in and out).
